There are few celebrities with more impact on the entire scene than Selena Gomez, the child star-turned-pop star-turned-serious actress who is now best recognized as Mabel Mora in Only Murders in the Building. But she has been a household name for more than a decade now, starting with her portrayal of Alex Russo on the Disney Channel television series Wizards of Waverly Place, which started back in 2007.
Looking at her life, most would think that she has achieved everything anyone could hope for, but Gomez has not gone without her share of struggles. Not only has she failed to enjoy a normal childhood, but she has also struggled significantly with heartbreaks, mental and physical disorders, and extended breaks in her bustling career.
But Selena Gomez has also been very vocal about not letting the negatives weigh down whatever is in front of her. She spoke about this to NPR's Lulu Garcia-Navarro in an interview back in 2020, where she claimed that she does not look back at the painful parts of her life with regret or much regard. She said:
"No, because I've found the strength in it. It's dangerous to stay in a victim mentality. And I'm not being disrespectful, I do feel I was a victim to certain abuse..."
It is never easy to bear the burden of this amount of fame, especially while dealing with numerous health issues amidst personal crises. In the interview, she spoke about the emotional abuse that she suffered and how she dealt with it.
She added:
"I had to find a way to understand it as an adult. And I had to understand the choices I was making. As much as I definitely don't want to spend the rest of my life talking about this, I am really proud that I can say I feel the strongest I've ever felt and I've found a way to just walk through it with as much grace as possible."
Moreover, Selena Gomez also spoke about why she has been public about all the issues she has faced, remarking that her life story would be narrated in one form or another and that she prefers to do it herself.
